Comments: Hiya Syd, here is my Elite80 review:
I must repeat that the build quality is excellent. Fit and finish are quite good. The exterior is rather utilitarian, and as Syd stated, he gets the metal made to his specifications and it doesn't 'look flashy'. It doesn't have the 'pomp and circumstance' of the McIntosh 275. The weight of the unit is substantial for its size. The tubes were packaged well and fit perfectly in their slots. A friend of mine gave me a pair of white gloves to handle the tubes as they didn't come with the unit.
The amp has a remote on/off switch, a volume/gain pot and a balance pot. The unit powers on and the soft warm glow of the tubes commences.
I'll try not to use verbalige like the tripe in "The Absolute Sound" while describing the amp. Sound-wise, the Elite80 performs extremely well. The treble is clear and undistorted. The bass is quite powerful but does not approach the authority of my SS Emotiva XPA-1 monoblocks. The midrange is where it really shined. It has the warmth and fullness associated with tube amps. Voices sounded downright fantastic making it seem like the singer is in the room with you. The amplifier picks up a lot of detail in the music and reproduces it well. While the 35W power output is not speaker shattering, it powers my pair of Jm Lab Electra 920's at decent SPL's without problem (92 dbs @ 8 ohms). As a matter of fact, I didn't clip it even at the top of my listening SPL range. The soundstage was very deep and wide.
I listened to a variety of music from Vivaldi, Bach, Diana Krall, Depeche Mode, Rufus Wainwright, Peter Gabriel, and my favourite modern composer Chicane. I've gotta say that all of the above sounded beautiful through the Elite80. I'm really enjoying it!
